Lutheran Social Services of the South (LSS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has a long history of serving the most vulnerable members of society. The agency’s roots go back to 1881, when a compassionate group of Lutherans founded the first Lutheran social ministry in Louisiana to care for children orphaned by the typhoid plague. In 1926, like-minded Lutherans established an asylum for widows and orphans in Round Rock, Texas. In January 1993, the two agencies merged to become Lutheran Social Services of the South, Inc.
