What Is Imposter Syndrome?
Imposter syndrome is an internal struggle with self-doubt and the perception that your achievements are due to luck rather than skill or effort. Despite being skilled professionals, people with imposter syndrome often fear being exposed as frauds.
What Are the Signs of Imposter Syndrome?
Common symptoms include:
- Persistent self-doubt and fear of failure
- Dismissing your achievements or attributing them to external factors
- Feeling undeserving of success
- An inability to objectively assess your skills and set realistic goals
Imposter Syndrome at Work
Imposter syndrome can adversely affect your career progression in several ways:
- Only applying for jobs if you meet every qualification
- Excessively criticizing yourself during interviews or performance reviews
- Hesitating to negotiate your salary or ask for a raise
- Avoiding new challenges due to fear of failure
How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome
Recognize Your Expertise: Start by objectively evaluating your skills and accomplishments. Your education, certifications, and other career milestones are a result of hard work, not sheer luck!
Ditch Perfectionism & Embrace Failures: Keep failures in perspective and practice self-compassion. View mistakes as chances to grow. Aim for progress over perfection, and understand when “good enough” is good enough.
Set Realistic Goals: Adopt the SMART framework for goal-setting: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This helps set realistic expectations and avoid burnout.
Use Positive Affirmations: Positive affirmations can transform self-doubt into confidence and help you combat imposter syndrome at work. Regularly remind yourself of your strengths and achievements to replace negative thoughts with empowering beliefs.
Celebrate Successes: Embrace and acknowledge your accomplishments. Share your wins with others and practice positive self-talk. Celebrating successes, big or small, reinforces your self-worth and motivation.
Seek Professional Help: Consulting a mental health professional can provide a supportive environment to explore self-doubt and develop personalized strategies. If you need to speak with someone immediately, call or text the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or go to 988lifeline.org.
